Student Senate at UC-Davis Votes For Unisex Restrooms
[DAVIS, CA] - Six ASUCD senators said goodbye to their lives as elected officials Thursday night during their last senate meeting before six new senators were sworn in by ASUCD Vice President Ardeshir Hormozyari.
After being sworn in, the six new ASUCD senators heard their first two pieces of legislation. The senate speedily passed a bill to allocate money to improve ASUCD's computer servers, then debated a resolution that recommends converting the campus' single-stall restrooms from gender-specific to unisex.
Authored by Gender and Sexuality Commission Chair Nathan Thomas, the resolution, which eventually passed with an 11-0-1 vote -- Sen. Kari Mansager was absent from the meeting -- says that altering the restrooms would lessen uncomfortable situations and dangers for people "whose gender identity differs from their sex and who are confronted and harassed when attempting to use gender-specific bathrooms."
The recommended change would apply only to single-stall restrooms. The senate discussed the possible dangers that could be posed toward women by unisex bathrooms that have multiple stalls.
