MERCEDES, Texas Michael R. Salinas novel, "The Right Sex," provides an insightful, new perspective on the controversy over the legal definition of marriage and its effects on families.
In "The Right Sex," the discovery of David Lowe's sex reassignment in a wrongful death case he filed as a result of his wife's death leads the defendants' attorneys to argue that David's chromosomes indicate he is still a woman. The defendants contend that David's marriage to his wife was invalid since Texas law only acknowledges marriages between a man and a woman.
David's in-laws soon use public opinion against gay and transsexual marriage to try to obtain legal custody of their grandson from David. The main character and his attorney take the case to the media. David soon finds himself fighting practically everyone to try to keep his family together.
